AI-assisted research nearly doubles the number of known Nazca geoglyphs, ancient symbols formed in the ground by moving stones or gravel that date back 2,000 years.

Thanks to a new A.I.-trained system, researchers have identified an additional 303 drawings in just six months.

The study shared in a journal on PNAS website showed AI assistance in discovering new geoglyphs in the Nazca desert. AI has helped archeologists discover 303 unknown huge land symbols, doubling the amount of known geoglyphs.

For over a century, archaeologists have scoured Peru’s Nazca Desert looking for enigmatic geoglyphs — vast figures that can only be fully appreciated from above. Some of these aerial artworks can span kilometers.
