The Carolina Panthers are moving on from longtime linebacker Shaq Thompson. The Panthers informed Thompson, who was set to become an unrestricted free agent, that they will not be re-signing him. Thompson is expected to pursue other options in free agency.

The last remaining Carolina Panther from their 2015 Super Bowl appearance, linebacker Shaq Thompson, is now hitting free agency. The organization announced Monday morning it would be moving in a different direction — one that does not involve the 30-year-old team captain.

The Carolina Panthers will not re-sign veteran outside linebacker Shaq Thompson, allowing the former first-round draft pick to enter free agency.

The sight of Thompson in a bucket hat instead of a helmet is an all-too-familiar one as the veteran linebacker has played in a total of six games in the last two seasons. Carolina's historically porous defense needs consistent contributors, not burgeoning question marks.

Thompson, the 25th pick of the 2015 draft by Carolina, was a five-time captain for the team. He had a career-high 135 tackles in 2022 and is fourth on the team's all-time tackle list with 741. He trails only Luke Kuechly (1,092), Thomas Davis (1,077) and Mike Minter (771).

In a Week 16 win over the Arizona Cardinals at Bank of America Stadium, the injury-plagued Panthers were down to three inside linebackers: Josey Jewell, undrafted free agent Jacoby Windmon, and special teams ace Jon Rhattigan, who played his first defensive snap the previous game.

Thompson, the linebacker who ranks fourth on the Carolina Panthers’ all-time tackle list, has been informed by the team that it will be moving in another direction at his position. Thompson, 30, will enter NFL free agency.
