John Malkovich will be starring in Marvel’s The Fantastic Four: First Steps this summer and recently opened up about why it took him this long to act in one. In a new interview, Malkovich revealed the real reason he had not appeared in the MCU until now was due to pay.

Malkovich told GQ that he turned down working in the Disney franchise for years prior to making his Marvel debut with “The Fantastic Four: First Steps.” The undisclosed role reunites him with director Matt Shaman, whom directed Malkovich in 2014 film “Cut Bank.”

Malkovich’s cast-mates in First Steps include Pedro Pascal, Vanessa Kirby, Ebon Moss-Bachrach, Joseph Quinn, Ralph Ineson, Julia Garner, Paul Walter Hauser, Natasha Lyonne and Sarah Niles, The movie, which is directed by WandaVision ’s Matt Shakman and takes place in a different corner of the Marvel multiverse, opens in theaters on July 25.
