The European Commission has opened new proceedings under the Digital Markets Act (DMA) that will see the bloc instruct Apple on how it can comply with its interoperability obligations. The two “specification proceedings” focused on iOS and iPadOS will conclude within six months.

These fairly new tech regulations in the EU have already impacted Apple in a number of major ways. Most notably, Apple was forced to allow third-party app stores on its iOS devices, like iPhone, which would compete with its own official App Store.

The European Commission plans to come up with its own measures that Apple has to follow to ensure interoperability if it doesn't want to pay huge fines.

Apple's devices, like the Apple Watch, are commercially important and rely on interoperability with smartphones and operating systems like iOS. The first process the Commission is starting focuses on how different devices connect and talk to each other.
