This review is for a tour that seems to cost $80 per person. We have a family of 5 which would cost US$400. Seems quite high. Isn't there just a taxi for a fraction of that? Is there something special about this tour?

As a 100% caleño (born and raised in Cali) I do recommend the Zoo. It is one of the MUST SEE in Cali and I recommend not to skip lunch at Restaurante Hacienda Del Bosque - right in the zoo (Google for 'haciendadelbosque'). One of the best dining experiences in Cali. Tickets to the Zoo are COP$18k for adults and $12k for children (US$6 and $4). Google for 'zoologicodecali'. Opening at 9am, this is the best time to visit as animals tend to hide as noon and afternoon temperatures rise. US$80 per person for a tour might sound high and it obviously will depend on what is included and who is behind it. You will visit the zoo and have lunch for much less than that in a half-day tour. I do recommend using Uber to move around as experience might be enhanced with some Uber drivers that even speak English - Beware with yellow-cabs and DO NOT attempt to stop one in the street. If in need, call 444-4444 (no kidding, that's the number) for a reliable yellow cab and ask for the rate based on the ride. Taxi in Colombia is very inexpensive. Make sure to include in your tour in Cali: - Cristo Rey (nice view over Cali - 1/2 hour drive + 1hr there) - Iglesia de San Antonio (1/2 hr there) - Sebastian de Belalcazar statue (1/2 hr there) - a riverside walk in the evening by EL Gato De Tejada with a pit-stop for a good ice cream in Ventolini (2hr total) - Iglesia La Ermita and Plaza de Caycedo (walk for a good feel of Cali) (1 to 2hrs) - Museo La Tertulia for a touch of art with a pit-stop in the eveing for a few 'pandebono' and 'empanadas' at El Obelisco (3 to 4hr) - Include a 6pm walk by Avenida 6a to feel the tropical breeze in Cali and enjoy the world-renowned beauty of the women in Cali. (1-2hr) - other option is to go to Parque Panamericano or even the town of Jamundi to have the experience of a 'cholao' - Hard to describe what it is but Google for 'Colombian Cholados'. You'll love them! If time allows, a must-do is a trip to the mountains to Dapa to have a nice grab of cool weather just 30 min away from Cali. Recommended restaurant La Barra de Manolo (Google for 'labarrademanolo' - open on the weekends - ask for him and let him know I sent you :) (4-5hr) If more time is allowed, a visit to Museo de La Caña is a great option to understand culture and history of Valle del Cauca (state where Cali is capital) and do not skip a pit-stop for a 'sancocho de gallina' (the typical dish in the region) in a roadside restaurant near the town of Ginebra for lunch. (8hr) If even more time is available, consider the Lago Calima and the city of Buga and El Milagroso cathedral - a full day trip. I know I am missing lots of things and hope this helps. :)
Q:
How long should I plan for a visit to the zoo?

Q:
Is it safe to bring an expensive camera and lens to zoo for photography?
A:
Yes it is perfectly safe. But only take it out once you are inside the zoo. Equally, put it away before going out of the gates.
